Malinda Okoro

14 years and 10 + surgeries

Malinda Chinwe Imo Okoro

14 years and 10+ surgeries; from spinal pain, to nerve damage, to a minor stroke, to cancer, to lymphedema, to a collapsed lung. You've been sick for so long yet seemed ever so healthy. Day by day you woke up in distress, suffered and endured, yet you still made yourself seem healthy and remained extremely active. Your eyes would be red from pain and you would say it feels like someone is constantly digging a hot knife into your back, yet you walked around bold and stood as strong as an Olympic athlete.
Never did you ever let your pain stop you from being a normal human being. Never did it stop you from successfully raising four kids and managing the household. Never did it stop you from fighting for us and pulling miracles when things didn't go our way. You were still able to help us define who we are, still able to protect us, help us get into prep school and college, consistently advise us, manage our lives, design a brand new house, have an impact on our school system and community, and most importantly put friends and family before yourself.

You never let any of your illnesses get in the way of your name, intelligence, identity, pride, or demeanor as those are traits that you held dear. No matter how many times you fell you kept going regardless of what was coming ahead and you never took no for an answer; the epitome of perseverance. Every single one of us you called your project, and everyone believes that you succeeded, on top of that, every person you touched you made better in one way or another. You knew that you didn't deserve to go through all of this but you took it as a challenge anyway.

The legacy you left on us and our community will remain unmatched and will forever be remembered.
Trying to recall all of your 2-3 hour lectures will be difficult, but as you always said, when the time comes your voice will be echoing the right decisions in our heads. The promises I made to you are the promises that I will always keep, thank you for dedicating your life to make our family what it is today. And as Josh rightly said, even though you can no longer hear us through your ears, you will always hear us from our hearts. Rest In Peace Mom, God will always win
