May 29th, 2008, the results of the Elizabeth High School Student Government election were announced over the loudspeakers. Isaac Iheke, attendant of EHS-Lower Academy, was announced to be the president elect. He will take office as the Sophomore Class President at the beginning of next school year. Isaac Iheke and Emeka Obinnakwelu, Jr., two Igbo students in the Gifted and Talented Program in the Elizabeth Public Schools system, received special awards as they graduated from 8th grade at Terence C. Reilly Middle School in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Friday, June 16, 2007.
Isaac Iheke, son of Chief Alexander Iheke of Igbere, Abia State and Mrs. Gail Iheke, received the Terence C. Reilly Award, including a plaque and a scholarship for demonstrating intellectual curiosity, an interest that exceeds the expectations of the classroom lesson, being self-motivated and demonstrating good character. At the conclusion of the graduation ceremony, Isaac’s name was engraved on a plaque listing all previous winners of the Terence C. Reilly Award, which is mounted on the lobby wall in the new school building named after Monsignor Joao S. Antao, where Terence C. Reilly Middle School is co-located with other G&T classes.
Emeka Obinnakwelu, Jr. is the son of Emeka Obinnakwelu, Sr. and Mrs. Ebele Obinnakwelu from Umunze in Anambra State. Emeka, Jr. was awarded the Michael S. Cohn Award for excellence in physical education. In addition to achieving academic excellence in physical education, Emeka, Jr. played on the school basketball team and track team.
According to Elizabeth Public Schools, applicants for admission to the Gifted and Talented Program must achieve 95 percentile on standardized tests to be considered for admission. Once admitted, students must maintain high academic standards and good conduct. Isaac and Emeka, Jr. have been admitted to Lower Academy for 9th grade G&T students at Elizabeth High School. We at Igbo Basics commend these Igbo sons for making their mark in middle school and wish them great success in high school and throughout their academic careers.

The faculty of Reilly Middle School has selected two students to receive a plaque and a scholarship in memory of Terence donated by his friend, Evan Stainman and his family.
The criteria for the award are as follows: the recipient must demonstrate, above all, intellectual curiosity; the recipient must have an interest in learning that exceeds the expectations of the classroom; the recipient must be self motivated; the recipient must demonstrate good character, and that all is what Isaac Iheke has been equal to.
